Who do you think will win?

Six rounds into a new Serie A season and already you can feel the pressure building at both ends of this one. Torino are still waiting for their first home win under a new manager who has been handed a serious project at Stadio Olimpico Grande. Udinese have gone from looking composed and well organised to shipping three straight defeats before the international break gave them time to breathe and regroup. Two clubs sitting on identical points totals, both needing a result, both carrying a bit of anxiety into Monday evening. That is a proper watch for a neutral.

What makes it even more interesting is the subplot around Torino’s new gaffer Ignazio Abate, a man making his Serie A managerial debut and finding out very quickly just how unforgiving this league can be. The heat is already on. And Udinese, for all their recent stumbles, are not the kind of side you want showing up when you are in that position.

Torino vs Udinese Match Details

This is a Serie A fixture at Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino in Turin, closing out the sixth round of the Italian top flight. Abate’s Granata host a Udinese side managed by Kosta Runjaic, with both clubs sitting on four points and desperate to kick on before the table starts to take a more definitive shape.

Team News

Neither side goes into this fully fit, and the selection decisions for both managers carry real weight given the importance of picking up points at this stage.

  • Niccolo Fortini picked up a thigh strain during the international break and had to withdraw from Italy Under-21 duty. He has been training individually and has not been ruled out, but he is a concern at left back for Torino.
  • Che Adams is back fit and available for the Granata, which is a proper boost. He goes into the mix alongside Sandro Kulenovic and Giovanni Simeone for the attacking role, though Simeone has not scored in seven Serie A appearances stretching back to last season.
  • Pietro Pellegri has returned to full training after yet another lengthy spell on the sidelines, but the forward is not expected to feature here.
  • Rolando Mandragora is available for Torino and brings experience as a key figure in midfield, with a notable history at Udinese between 2018 and 2021.
  • Idrissa Gueye has had ankle surgery and is out for Udinese. Nicolo Zaniolo and Jakub Piotrowski are also sidelined.
  • Wing-back Juan Arizala is a doubt for the visitors.
  • Keinan Davis is set to lead the Udinese attack, with Vakoun Bayo the alternative option up front.

Predicted Lineups

Abate looks set to go with a back three of Comert, Coco and Rodriguez, with Belghali and Cacciamani providing width from the full-back positions. Mandragora, Fitz-Jim and Casadei should operate in central midfield, with Vlasic just behind the striker. The big call is who leads the line. Simeone has started most games but has nothing to show for it in front of goal. Kulenovic got Torino out of jail at Bologna with that late leveller. Adams returning from injury adds another option, and Abate has a genuine selection headache that could define how the game plays out.

Runjaic is expected to set up with a back four of Abankwah, Kabasele, Solet and Vojvoda, with Karlstrom and Miller holding in midfield and Kamara alongside them. Gomez and Ekkelenkamp operating from advanced positions gives Udinese creativity and directness in the final third, while Davis leads the line with Gueye unavailable through surgery.

Recent Form

Torino’s season has had the feel of a team still finding its identity. Abate took over a club that finished last term on a reasonable run of form under interim manager D’Aversa, but the early signs under the new gaffer have been patchy at best. A defeat to AC Milan is one thing, you can forgive that. But losing to Sassuolo, going out of the Coppa Italia to Monza and then getting beaten 2-0 by Roma paints a picture of a side that has not yet worked out how to control a game. The win at Fiorentina was genuinely encouraging, and Kulenovic’s late equaliser at Bologna showed some fighting spirit, but the absence of a home win from two attempts at Stadio Olimpico Grande is a real concern. Last season they were unbeaten in six straight home league games at this ground. Something has clearly changed.

Udinese started this campaign looking sharp. Back-to-back Coppa Italia victories and then an unbeaten opening to the Serie A season suggested Runjaic had built on the solid foundations of the previous two years. Then it fell apart. Three consecutive defeats, the most recent a loss to Cagliari of all clubs, has shifted the mood around the Friulani considerably. The most worrying stat is the second half problem. No side in the division has scored fewer goals after the break, just two, and that tells you that teams are working them out as games go on. They start well enough but they run out of ideas and energy when it matters most.

The international break has given Udinese three full weeks to sit with those defeats. That can go either way. Sometimes the pause allows a squad to reset and come back sharper. Other times it just means the negativity has had longer to settle in. How they come out in the first twenty minutes at Stadio Olimpico Grande will tell you a lot.

Head-to-Head Record

Torino have a reasonable record against Udinese at home historically, losing just twice in their last ten meetings on this ground while keeping clean sheets in five of those fixtures. That kind of defensive solidity in a home context is worth noting, even if recent form at this ground under Abate has not matched those historical numbers.

That said, Udinese ended a run of six games without a win in this fixture by completing the league double over Torino last season, and it started with a 2-1 victory in Turin back in January. So the visitors know they can come here and get a result. This is not a fixture where Torino can assume home advantage automatically gives them a platform.

Key Stats

  • Udinese have scored just two second-half goals all season, fewer than any other side in Serie A. If Torino can stay level at half time, the dynamics shift significantly in their favour.
  • Jurgen Ekkelenkamp has been involved in six goals across his last five Serie A away games from an advanced midfield role. He also scored in this fixture last season. He is the biggest threat Udinese carry.
  • Giovanni Simeone has gone seven Serie A games without a goal. If Abate sticks with him up front, Torino need a response from somewhere else.

Torino vs Udinese Betting Tips

This is a tricky match to call confidently, but there are angles here that feel backed by genuine evidence rather than guesswork. The Udinese second-half problem is real and documented. Ekkelenkamp is in form away from home. And Torino desperately need something to shift the mood at Stadio Olimpico Grande. That tension tends to create nervy, niggly football rather than free-flowing stuff, which shapes the way I am looking at the markets.

Cards Prediction

Two sides under pressure, a new manager needing a result at home and an away team trying to arrest a three-game losing run. This has the ingredients for a feisty evening. Expect midfield battles and late challenges as the stakes ramp up, and I would back this to produce over three cards before the final whistle.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Torino have looked vulnerable at the back despite showing some resilience in certain games, and Ekkelenkamp’s form in away fixtures makes Udinese capable of finding the net. At the same time, Toro have enough quality in the final third to threaten, particularly if Adams starts and brings some energy that has been missing. BTTS yes looks a reasonable shout here.

Correct Score Prediction

Given the anxiety around both camps and the defensive tendencies Torino have shown at home historically, I am going for a tight one. A 1-1 draw feels like it fits the pattern. Udinese score early through Ekkelenkamp or Davis, Torino dig deep and find an equaliser, and neither side has the composure or the firepower to push on and win it.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Jurgen Ekkelenkamp has been electric in away games this season. Six goal involvements in five Serie A away fixtures is not a coincidence, and he scored in this exact fixture last season. Playing in that advanced midfield role he has the freedom to arrive late into the box and he knows where the net is. He is the standout pick for first goalscorer at what should be a decent price given he is not the recognised striker.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
Both Teams To Score Yes
First Goalscorer Jurgen Ekkelenkamp
Total Cards Over 3.5

A tense, competitive fixture where both sides find the net, Ekkelenkamp continues his excellent away form and the pressure on both managers produces a heated contest in the middle of the park ties together nicely into one bet builder.

Final Match Prediction

On balance, Udinese are probably the slightly better constructed side right now despite their recent dip. Runjaic has had two years to build something at this club, and the squad depth is real even without the injured players. Abate is still working out his best lineup and his best system, and doing that in front of a home crowd that is already frustrated is not easy.

But the head-to-head history at this ground gives Torino some comfort, and the sheer need for a home win could galvanise the Granata. I am going for a 1-1 draw. Both teams find the net, neither finds the winner, and both managers head into the next week with the same uncomfortable feeling they had going in.
