Tip 1: Saul Alvarez is the clear favourite ahead of his unification bout with William Scull and it is hard to see the Mexican superstar slipping up on Cinco de Mayo weekend.

Canelo has an incredible 62-2-2 record and he has been found out only against elite fighters, aside from a draw in a four-round contest in the early stages of his career.

Scull is unbeaten with 23 wins in as many fights, but he has never faced an opponent anywhere near Canelo’s standard, and this could prove to be far too big a test for the Cuban.

However, Scull looks capable of at least reaching the final bell as he has never been knocked down, despite sharing the ring with some heavy hitters.

Canelo has a stoppage rate of just under 63% but in recent years he hasn’t been quite as devastating. The 34-year-old’s last six fights have all gone the distance and he last stopped an opponent in 2021, when he claimed a TKO win over Caleb Plant in the 11th round.

Tip 2: Scull is the IBF champion, a title he won in his last bout against Vladimir Shishkin after Canelo had vacated, and he should make this competitive at various stages. Ultimately, though, it is hard to see him enjoying much success against such a master technician.

In terms of experience, there is a huge gulf here as Canelo has shared the ring with some of the modern greats, whereas Scull’s win over the 16-0 Shishkin is the clear highlight of his career.

El Indomable should be able to see out the fight but he may do so without winning a single round. In terms of his defensive skills, Canelo is a true master and he has comprehensively outboxed each of his last three opponents.

Scull is probably technically better than Edgar Berlanga, Canelo’s last victim, but Jaime Munguia and Jermell Charlo are both highly-skilled fighters who were unable to make any kind of real impact in his two fights prior to the Berlanga clash.

Canelo has won his last five fights via unanimous decision and he can make it six in a row against Scull.
