Nations League outright tips
Portugal & Spain to qualify at 19/5
Hosts Germany head into their semi-final as favourites to lift the trophy, but injuries could hamper their hopes of winning the Nations League for the first time.
Manager Julian Nagelsmann is without five of the players that started their second-leg clash with Italy. Defenders Antonio Rudiger and Nico Schlotterbeck are missing, along with midfielders Angelo Stiller and Jamal Musiala. Forward Tim Kleindiest, who has scored four times across his first six internationals, is also missing.
Germany have struggled to fill their centre-forward role in recent years, with Kai Havertz leading the line at the Euros last summer. The Arsenal man remains sidelined, leaving the hosts light up top.
They’ve been weakened by the retirement of Toni Kroos last summer, while Euro 2024 standout Musiala was a driving force behind their strongest displays. Those absentees could trouble them against a solid Portuguese side in the semi-finals.
Portugal boss Roberto Martinez has his detractors, but he has proven capable of making sides hard to beat at this level. His side forced France to penalties in the last eight of the Euros after a 0-0 draw, while he turned a talented Belgian side into a functional outfit on their way to the semis of the 2018 World Cup.
Martinez should give his side a little more freedom outside of a major tournament, especially as he has two-thirds of PSG’s Champions League-winning midfield at his disposal. Vitinha and Joao Neves should give Portugal control of the midfield against a German side that is still searching for a long-term partner for Leon Goretzka in the middle of the park.
Injuries are a key factor in the second semi-final, with France missing three of the back-four which started their last international. Didier Deschamps will be forced into selecting a makeshift defence to keep Lamine Yamal and co. quiet, so Spain can progress at their expense.
Spain to win at 9/4
Defending Nations League champions Spain can become the first side to retain the trophy, thanks to a largely healthy squad. Rodri continues to miss out for Spain, but Arsenal target Martin Zubimendi was a more than capable replacement in the Euros final last year.
The perceived weak link of the Spanish side last summer was Marc Cucurella, who has arguably been Chelsea’s player of the season this term. Yamal and Nico Williams can make up for their lack of cutting edge at centre-forward, while Luis de la Fuente has an embarrassment of riches in midfield.
The Spanish are unbeaten across their previous 23 competitive fixtures, so back them to lift another trophy in Germany this summer.
