Lincoln Handicap Tips & Odds – 2026 Meeting at Doncaster

You’re in the right place for 2026 Lincoln Handicap tips. After Mr Professor’s win at 33/1 in 2024, we’re looking for more terrific potential ante-post value for the race at Doncaster on March 28. We’ll guide you through the entries, ante-post odds, key trends and of course our own tips and insights, as the British Flat turf season gets going in style.

Tips for Lincoln Handicap Races

Doncaster’s Lincoln Handicap meeting is run across Saturday March 28 and Sunday March 29. All the major races are on day one, including the Lincoln itself, as well as the consolation race, the Spring Mile. We have early tips for Lincoln Handicap runners, with the ante-post odds already nicely matured.

Info box icon

This could be the year of Anno Domini

Top trainer Charlie Appleby won this race in both 2016 and 2019 with improving four-year-olds, and he has two key contenders again, including Anno Domini. With a similar profile to past winners, Anno Domini looks well handicapped and is a great price. He was on the wrong part of the track when beaten in Dubai, but he’ll be race fit and has lots more to offer.

Info box icon

Mudbir – the best handicapped horse in the race

While weather and underfoot conditions will play their part, the most important metric is the handicap. On that score, Mudbir comes out on top as we think he can achieve a rating of at least 105, meaning he’ll be a minimum of 10lbs well in for the Lincoln.

Info box icon

Sallaal is a classic improving four-year-old

Roger Varian, like Charlie Appleby and Mudbir’s trainers John & Thady Gosden, is top quality. He improved Sallaal throughout last season, and there’s not a hint that he’s done climbing the ladder. He will handle the big field, most going types, and is the final of our three ante-post Lincoln Handicap tips.

Lincoln Handicap Betting Odds

More odds will be added in time for the Cammidge Trophy and the Doncaster Mile. For now, the ante post betting Lincoln Handicap list is the one to concentrate on. These are the main contenders according to the bookies – try to get a non-runner, no bet deal if you can.

Horse Ante-Post Odds Bookmaker
Eternal Force 9/1 Betway
Crown Of Oaks 10/1 William Hill
Shout 12/1 Casumo
Sallaal 12/1 BetMGM
La Botte 12/1 bet365
Sea Force 12/1 BetVictor
Rogue Diplomat 14/1 Ladbrokes
Elarak 16/1 BetMGM
Mudbir 16/1 Betfred
Anno Domini 25/1 William Hill

How We Select Our Lincoln Handicap Tips

Our well-researched Lincoln Handicap tips are based on several key factors. We leave no stone unturned, primarily focusing on these metrics:

Horse Ability

toggle

All horses in the Lincoln have an official rating, provided by the BHA. We review this, deciding on whether we think that rating is correct.

The Handicap (weights)

toggle

The Lincoln is a handicap, so what is crucial is taking a horse’s actual ability and comparing it to their rating. Those we think are rated incorrectly (too low) may be very well off in the handicap, while those we think are rated too highly may be vulnerable.

Horse Profile

toggle

A horse’s overall profile is crucial. We consider current ability, likely changes in that, age, past form, and their all-important pedigree which on the Flat, tells us so much about what they may achieve in the future.

Progression / Regression

toggle

Form and breeding allow us to see a pattern. Most horses, especially the top contenders in the Lincoln, are progressing, and we must second guess how quickly. Others may be going backwards in their careers, something else we need to keep an eye on.

The Draw

toggle

Horses will be spread across the track for this straight one-mile race. We look at track conditions, as well as past results, to see where the bias may be, giving more weight to horses drawn in stalls in that area.

The Human Element

toggle

Some jockeys and trainers are better than others. Where possible, we like our horses to come from proven yards, those we know are treating the horses correctly and training them to get better. As for the top riders, they make that crucial last bit of difference when races get close.

Distance

toggle

The Lincoln is run over a mile, and we like to know that our horses will see that mile out well in the likely conditions.

The Track

toggle

Doncaster’s straight mile will be in use for the Lincoln, but it still needs to be ridden a certain way. With no bend to take, a horse capable of an even gallop all the way to the line is preferred.

The Ground

toggle

The ground may come up soft in the Lincoln, so form and breeding, as well as running style, will tell us plenty about who we think will not get stuck in the mud. If it is soft, we like those with a longer, rounder action.

Sponsors William Hill are the firm to side with for the Lincoln

Gary Christie: As the official race sponsor, we expect William Hill’s odds and offers to be solid. Already a top name in horse racing, this brand has everything we look for in advance of the big race.

Lincoln Handicap odds are a huge deal. We need more than a beginners’ guide here, we show you the best markets to play on this historic race.

Ante-Post Bets

toggle

Odds are at their best the earlier you bet, though things can change as the race gets nearer. Many people double up their ante-post bet with one in the Grand National, the two races being known together as the ‘Spring Double’.

Win & Each-Way

toggle

On the day, the simplest bets are the most popular. Back your horse to win, or back it each-way, which means paying double, but also having the fallback of the ‘place’ portion of the wager.

Forecast & Tricast Bets

toggle

Though hard to predict, forecast and tricast bets can payout in a big way. For these, you bet on the first two or first three home, in the right order.

Lincoln Handicap Racecard

At the first stage, there are 125 Lincoln Handicap entries. Only the top 22 make the final field, others will drop into the consolation race (Spring Mile), while some will not get a run at all. We’ll have the full racecards at declaration time. For now, these are the best of those likely to make the cut:

6/10 winners (60%) were in the top 6 in the betting market.

The top stat here is a good one. Most Lincoln winners are improving four-year-olds, or well-handicapped five-year-olds making their seasonal debut. That may knock out those arriving from the Lincoln Trial at Wolverhampton. The only non-seasonal debutant winner in this bunch was a horse who’d been racing in Dubai for Charlie Appleby, which is the case this year with Anno Domini.

Doncaster Racecourse Tips

Doncaster’s course is left-handed and galloping in nature, regarded as one of the fairest in the country. Our big race is run on the straight mile with no turns involved. The track is mostly flat, with a slight uphill run on the round course, ten furlongs out.

Despite that topography, the weather is crucial in the Lincoln. Free draining is used, so the ground can come up quite soft, and Doncaster’s mile can feel like a long way home when conditions are muddy. Strong, galloping types are preferred to speedier horses with choppy actions.

Racing differs so much from track to track, even on the same day, and when is the Lincoln Handicap? It’s on the same Saturday as the Dubai World Cup card in which speed will be crucial. Here, strong gallopers with a big, round action will be favoured instead, showing the need to bet on just the right types as not all tracks are the same.
