Who do you think will win?

Belarus have quietly been building something under Viktor Goncharenko. They are not a side that will blow you away, but they are hard to beat, hard to break down, and when they do get forward now they carry a genuine threat. Four points from three Nations League games tells a decent story for a team that was written off before a ball was kicked. Finland, on the other hand, are the form side in Group C1. Leo Walta has been on fire, Jacob Friis has his squad ticking nicely, and they come into this one having just turned over Albania from a goal behind. Two sides moving in opposite directions in terms of confidence, even if the gap in quality is probably smaller than the table suggests.

What makes this interesting is that Belarus have already held Finland to a 0-0 in Helsinki this campaign. Goncharenko knows exactly how to frustrate the Finns, and now with a 4-0 win over San Marino under their belts, his lads will arrive in Budapest with real belief. Finland though have Walta in the kind of form that managers dream about, and Pohjanpalo leading the line is never a comfortable afternoon for any defence. Something has to give.

Belarus vs Finland Match Details

This UEFA Nations League League C Group 1 fixture takes place at the Illovszky Rudolf Stadion in Budapest. Belarus continue to play their nominal home matches on neutral ground due to ongoing UEFA restrictions preventing them from hosting games in the country itself. Finland will effectively be playing as the away side, which is an unfamiliar position for them given that they have been the hosts in five of the six previous meetings between these two nations.

Team News

Neither side is dealing with any significant injury problems heading into this one, which keeps selection fairly straightforward for both gaffers. Finland do have one enforced change to factor in though.

  • Kaan Kairinen is suspended for Finland after picking up two yellow cards in the group stage
  • Glen Kamara returns to the Finland squad after being absent for around a year
  • Oliver Antman and Naatan Skytta were not selected for this squad
  • Nikolai Alho and Jesse Joronen have retired from international football
  • Belarus have no injuries or suspensions to report and Goncharenko is expected to name his strongest available side

Predicted Lineups

Goncharenko has settled on a recognisable core and there is no reason to expect him to deviate from it here. Fedor Lapoukhov starts in goal behind a back four of Begunov, Gomanov, Volkov and Pechenin. Ebong and Yablonskiy will provide the engine in midfield, while Kontsevoi operates from the right after his brace against San Marino. Gromyko and Simanenka offer creativity in the advanced areas, with Melnichenko leading the line.

Friis faces one selection headache with Kairinen missing through suspension, and that is where the returning Kamara could step straight back in. Hradecky keeps his place between the sticks, with a back four of Stahl, the two Miettinenss and Lahteenmaki. Kamara and Markhiev look set to partner in central midfield, with Walta given the license to get forward and join Svanback, Pohjanpalo and Hakans in attack.

Recent Form

Belarus opened their Nations League campaign with a 2-0 loss away to Albania, which set a few alarm bells ringing. But Goncharenko steadied the ship quickly. The goalless draw in Helsinki was a serious defensive performance, keeping Finland at bay on their own patch, and then Saturday brought that 4-0 demolition of San Marino. Kontsevoi netted twice, Shumanskiy and Ebong also scored, and suddenly this Belarus side looks like it has teeth as well as a solid defensive structure. Across their last 10 matches, they have conceded no more than two in any single game, and they have only shipped two goals across the whole Nations League group stage so far. That is not luck, that is an organised, disciplined backline doing its job.

Finland have seven points from three games and they look like the class act in this group. Their only wobble was going behind to Albania inside four minutes on Saturday, but Walta levelled before half time and then tucked away the winner in the second half to complete the comeback. That showed character as well as quality. Walta has been the standout player of the group stage by some distance, with five goals already, including a hat trick against San Marino and the brace against Albania. Pohjanpalo has also been among the goals, bagging a hat trick of his own in the 7-0 thrashing of San Marino.

What the numbers show is that Finland have more firepower and are better equipped to manufacture goals against a stubborn low block. But Belarus have already proved they can frustrate Friis’s side once this campaign. If Goncharenko gets his structure right, Finland will need a moment of quality rather than sustained pressure to break through.

Head-to-Head Record

This is the seventh meeting between the two sides, and Belarus have not won any of the first six. That is a significant record. Five of those six games were played in Finland, so the Finns have had the comfort of home advantage for the vast majority of the head to head history. The only time Finland have played away in this fixture, it finished 1-1, which is about as close to a competitive away performance as Belarus have produced against them.

The draw in Helsinki earlier in this Nations League campaign adds some fresh context. Belarus have shown they can match Finland over 90 minutes when defensively disciplined, and with a morale boosting win now on the board, Goncharenko will be telling his players this is absolutely winnable. History says otherwise, but momentum and belief are powerful things.

Key Stats

  • Leo Walta has scored five goals in three Nations League games, including a hat trick and a brace in back to back matches
  • Belarus have conceded just two goals across the entire Nations League group stage
  • Finland lead Group C1 with seven points, three clear of Belarus who sit third
  • Belarus have never beaten Finland in six previous meetings
  • The two sides played out a 0-0 draw when they met in Helsinki earlier in this same campaign

Belarus vs Finland Betting Tips

Belarus are a tough nut to crack and Goncharenko has clearly drilled that defensive discipline into them, but Finland have the attacking weapons to eventually find a way through. Walta is in the kind of form you simply cannot plan for, and with Pohjanpalo offering a physical outlet in the box, the Finns have multiple routes to goal. My angle on this one is a narrow Finland win, with goals possibly coming at a premium given what we know about how Belarus defend.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Prediction

Belarus kept a clean sheet in Helsinki and have been miserly throughout this campaign, conceding only two goals in three games. Finland are the better attacking side but they are not a free scoring machine against well organised defences. My call is no BTTS here, with Finland likely to edge it but Belarus keeping things tight enough to potentially stay out of trouble themselves.

Over and Under Goals Prediction

Given that the first meeting between these sides this campaign ended 0-0, and that Belarus have been one of the tightest defences in the group, under 2.5 goals looks the value pick. Finland are capable of scoring but they will have to work extremely hard to break Goncharenko’s structure down, and a single goal could well be enough to settle this one.

First Goalscorer Prediction

Leo Walta is the obvious shout and there is no point pretending otherwise. Five goals in three games, he is in the form of his life, he gets forward with purpose and he has already scored against Belarus once this campaign in the Helsinki draw. At whatever odds the books are offering on him to score first, he is comfortably the most likely name to be on the scoresheet.

Cards Prediction

Belarus defend compactly and with discipline rather than recklessly, which has kept their disciplinary record reasonably clean. That said, if Finland start to pin them back in the second half and Belarus are scrambling to protect a lead or stay level, you can expect some niggling fouls to creep in. Over 3.5 cards in total feels reasonable given the competitive nature of the fixture and the pressure Belarus will be under as the game progresses.

Correct Score Prediction

Finland to edge it 1-0. The first meeting ended goalless and Belarus are not going to suddenly become an open side just because they beat San Marino. Walta or Pohjanpalo is the most likely source of the goal, and one moment of quality could be all it takes to separate the sides. A narrow Finland win with a clean sheet for Hradecky feels right.

Corners Prediction

Finland will do the bulk of the attacking once Belarus drop into their defensive shape, which means plenty of possession and forward pressure. That should generate corners consistently throughout the game. Over 9.5 corners looks reasonable, with Finland likely to be winning the majority of them as they probe for a way through.

Bet Builder Tip

Market Selection
First Goalscorer Leo Walta
Under 2.5 Goals Under 2.5
Over 9.5 Corners Over 9.5

Walta scoring the only goal in a tight, low scoring game where Finland dominate possession and territory ties all three picks together neatly.

Final Match Prediction

Belarus have genuinely improved under Goncharenko and they deserve credit for that. They are compact, well organised, and they have shown they can frustrate better sides than themselves. But Finland are the top side in this group for a reason, and with Walta in the kind of form that wins matches on his own, the Finns will feel confident about getting the job done even against a stubborn opponent.

Expect a tight, attritional affair where Finland eventually find a way through. A 1-0 win for the visitors is the prediction, with Walta the most likely candidate to provide the decisive moment. Belarus will make them work for it, but class will out in the end.
