Leeds to Win v Norwich

📅

Kick Off: Wednesday 22nd January at 19:45

This match comes at a fairly bad time for Norwich. It is never easy going to Elland Road, but Norwich also find themselves in a fairly bad way with injuries and this is definitely manifesting itself into some underpowered performances, especially away from home.

Just starting with Leeds though, and their sheer consistency of domination, especially at home, is remarkable. They have now played 14 home matches in the Championship this season and won 11, which is obviously good.

They have conceded only 7 times, 3 of which came on opening day, so only 4 in the subsequent 12 matches, and, most remarkably of all, they have conceded less than 1 xG in every single 1 of those home matches.

Norwich are not in the best of states to trouble that record, though they would seem like a team who can threaten most Championship teams at their best. Josh Sargent was back in the matchday squad last time out, but he is not yet fully fit. Marcelino Nunez suffered a setback and missed the weekend as well, which gave a really weak look to their starting XI, especially in forward areas.

The Canaries’ new signing, £7 million man Matej Jurasek, cannot yet play for them due to work permit issues, and £10 million man Ante Crnac doesn’t appear to be hitting the ground running. All while second tier top scorer Borja Sainz is serving a 6-game ban for spitting.

The visitors generated just 0.35 xG at Sheffield United last weekend, which came after a humbling 4-0 defeat at home to Premier League Brighton in the FA Cup.

A trip to Leeds to round off a trio of tough matches isn’t ideal, but perhaps best to get it out of the way before attacking the remainder of the season knowing that a good run of fixtures is around the corner.

Burnley to Win at Plymouth

📅

Kick Off: Wednesday 22nd January at 20:00

If Miron Muslic was unaware of the task facing him at Plymouth, their impotent display at home to QPR certainly would have brought it home to him.

Plymouth’s big issue this season has generally been conceding goals, but on Saturday they failed to create anything at all. A home display from Plymouth of only 0.18 xG from 4 shots is dire, and allowing 2.9 xGA to a QPR side not known for its free-flowing attacking play also says a lot about how poor Plymouth were.

The Pilgrims remain at home here, but face another resolute defensive team in promotion-chasing Burnley. Scott Parker’s men were held by Sunderland last week but should have more joy against the bottom team.

What remained very noticeable against the Black Cats was the speed at which Burnley were able to get all 11 men behind the ball in a 4-2-4 defensive shape, with wingers and full backs tight to their central team-mates, Plymouth will struggle to get through that.

Burnley had enough about them from an attacking perspective to dominate some passages of the match against a good Sunderland side too. Against Plymouth, they should have more of the ball and more intent to get a goal.

At the same time, it would be a surprise for Plymouth to trouble Burnley often here. Burnley should be winning the xG battle here, so, as long as chances are taken, the Clarets are a good bet to return back to Lancashire in the early hours of Thursday with all 3 points.
