This Weekend’s SPFL Accumulator Tips
Celtic remain in formidable touch in the Premiership, particularly when playing at Parkhead, and St Johnstone are likely to suffer on Saturday.
Far from their best against Motherwell on Boxing Day, the Hoops still managed to find a way to claim a 4-0 success. Brendan Rodgers rotated his team that day in preparation for the Old Firm clash against Rangers on January 2, and while that encounter will certainly be on his mind, the hosts are more than good enough to win this game by a 2-goal margin or more even if big changes are made.
Celtic, after all, have only failed to win a home domestic match this season by at least 2 clear goals on 1 occasion – a 2-2 draw with Aberdeen.
St Johnstone, meanwhile, come into this game after 4 losses in their last 5. They are more attacking under Simo Valakari, but they have not yet received much reward via an uptick in their results, with Dundee United coming from behind to beat them 2-1 on Boxing Day.
Celtic won 6-0 when they visited Perth in September, and even if this game is unlikely to be as 1-sided, a big win for the hosts is forecast.
Aberdeen’s form has completely collapsed, and so the prospect of them winning against a Dundee United side that is 1 of the hardest in the league to beat, is 1 that is hard to see.
The Dons started the season brilliantly but have taken only 3 points in their last 7 matches, losing 4 along the way. Indeed, they’ve not been particularly strong on the road at any point this season, with just 3 road victories overall in the league and a negative goal difference from their 8 away matches.
The manner in which they were crushed 4-0 by Kilmarnock at the weekend was particularly alarming. It was a soft display defensively while they carried precious little attacking menace.
Dundee United, meanwhile, are only 6 points behind the Dons in the table and have built impressive momentum in recent weeks. Jim Goodwin’s side have lost only 1 of their last 8 matches, including draws against Rangers and Celtic.
Unfortunate to lose 1-0 to Aberdeen at Pittodrie in October, they look a good price to take something from this match against their out-of-sorts opponents.
Queen of the South are an outstanding price to beat Annan Athletic in League One on Saturday, with the hosts boasting the best points-per-game at home of any club in the league while their opponents are 1 of the worst travelling teams.
The hosts have picked up 6 wins from their 8 home matches, including a 2-0 success against Annan back in August. They have lost only once at home – a thumping 5-1 loss to Kelty, during which they conceded more than half of the goals they have leaked all season at home thus far. Since then, they have won 2 of their last 3 in front of the Palmerston crowd.
Annan should be comfortable beatable for Queens. This, after all, is a side that has lost 7 of its 9 away matches in the league and was also beaten by Highland League outfit Fraserburgh recently in the Scottish Cup. That defeat is 1 of 5 that the Borderers have endured in their last 8 matches.
Annan’s last away trip was a 5-1 victory over Dumbarton, but that result is completely out of step with what has gone before it, and Wullie Gibson’s side have since lost 4-0 at home to Arbroath in a game far more in keeping with their recent form.
Edinburgh City continue to be slept on by the bookmakers, with Michael McIndoe’s side the form team in League Two and a ridiculous price simply to avoid defeat when they visit local rivals Spartans on Saturday.
The hosts come into this game with 3 wins in their last 5. They have, however, played a succession of weak opponents during this run, including home wins against an erratic Stirling side and a struggling Clyde team. Last weekend, the hosts were beaten 5-1 against East Fife. Indeed, they have conceded at least 2 goals in each of their last 3 games, which does not bode well.
Edinburgh City, meanwhile, have suffered only 1 defeat in their last 8 games. That was a competitive loss against Dunfermline of the Championship in the Scottish Cup. In terms of league matches, they are 6 without a loss, with 5 wins in that time.
The last meeting between these clubs came in October, when Edinburgh ran out 2-0 winners in this fixture, and the price of 3.80 on them to get the victory also looks highly appealing after the Citizens claimed a 1-0 win over league leaders Elgin at home last week.
